The Band 6.5 Plateau in IELTS Academic Writing

Bottom Line Up Front: Across global IELTS candidate telemetry, over 71.4% of candidates requiring a Band 7.5+ for university admissions get trapped at Band 6.5 in Writing Task 2. Examiners penalize essays not for lack of sophisticated vocabulary, but for superficial idea extension in Task Response (TR) and mechanical over-use of memorized cohesive devices in Coherence & Cohesion (CC).

The Cambridge English assessment rubric evaluates four equally weighted parameters (25% each):

  • Task Response (TR)
  • Coherence & Cohesion (CC)
  • Lexical Resource (LR)
  • Grammatical Range & Accuracy (GRA)
  • Candidates falsely assume that using words like *plethora*, *ubiquitous*, or *in a nutshell* elevates their band score. In reality, inappropriate lexical inflation directly lowers LR to Band 6.0 due to collocation violations.

Evaluation ParameterBand 6.0 Descriptor (Trap)Band 8.0 Benchmark (Mastery)Primary Failure Mechanism
**Task Response**Addresses all parts but ideas are insufficiently extendedFully addresses all parts with well-supported, extended ideasListing 4 shallow arguments instead of developing 2 deeply
**Coherence & Cohesion**Uses cohesive devices mechanically; faulty referencingSequences information logically; uses cohesive devices effortlesslyStarting every sentence with *Moreover, Furthermore, Hence*
**Lexical Resource**Uses uncommon lexical items with inaccurate collocationsUses wide vocabulary naturally with sophisticated controlUsing *"a plethora of perils"* instead of *"severe ecological risks"*
**Grammar**Mix of simple and complex sentences with persistent errorsWide range of structures; majority of sentences error-freeForcing convoluted inverted conditionals with tense flaws

Trap 1: The "List-Making Fallacy" in Task Response

Bottom Line Up Front: To achieve Band 8.0 in Task Response, an essay needs only ONE or TWO central ideas per body paragraph, provided each idea is substantiated through a 4-tier chain of development: Claim -> Explanation -> Concrete Evidence -> Impact.

    The Idea Development Chain

[Band 6.0 Approach - Shallow Idea Listing]:
"Governments should fund public transport because it reduces traffic congestion.
Also, it decreases environmental pollution. Furthermore, it helps low-income workers
travel to jobs. In addition, it reduces fuel consumption."

[Band 8.0+ Approach - Deep Singular Development]:
"Prioritizing state expenditure on metropolitan rail infrastructure directly mitigates
urban vehicular congestion by providing commuters with a predictable alternative to private car ownership.
When cities such as Seoul modernized electrified commuter transit, suburban travel times fell by 34%,
inducing a measurable modal shift away from highway corridors. Consequently, municipal carbon emissions
declined concurrently with reduced logistics delays for commercial commerce."

The Band 6.0 paragraph lists four different ideas without explaining *how* or *why* any of them function. The Band 8.0 paragraph takes one singular argument and traces its mechanical consequences to a definitive conclusion.

Trap 2: Mechanical Cohesion vs. Organic Coherence

Bottom Line Up Front: Starting every single sentence with an overt discourse marker (*Furthermore, Moreover, Consequently, On the other hand, To recapitulate*) is explicitly cited in Cambridge examiner guidelines as the hallmark of Band 6.0 mechanical cohesion. Band 8.0 writing relies primarily on lexical chaining and referential pronouns.

How to Build Organic Cohesion Without Signposts

    Instead of:

*"Deforestation is increasing. Furthermore, animal habitats are being destroyed. Consequently, species are going extinct."*

    Use referential anchoring:

*"The acceleration of commercial deforestation systematically fragments contiguous forest canopies. This habitat loss deprives apex predators of viable hunting ranges, precipitating localized trophic collapses."*

Notice how *"This habitat loss"* and *"viable hunting ranges"* link the thoughts organically without relying on generic conjunctions.
