Passage Reference
Few twentieth-century epistemological treatises provoked as virulent a reaction from philosophers of science as Thomas Kuhn's 1962 monograph, *The Structure of Scientific Revolutions*. Kuhn radically subverted the dominant logical positivist narrative, which envisioned scientific inquiry as a teleological, cumulative accretion of objective empirical facts. Positivists maintained that successively adopted theories represent closer approximations of ontologically objective reality, with predecessor models smoothly subsumed as special limiting cases of their successors—as Newtonian classical mechanics was purportedly subsumed under Einsteinian general relativity.
Kuhn countered that normal science operates within communal "paradigms"—unquestioned constellations of shared assumptions, symbolic generalizations, instrumentation standards, and exemplary problem-solutions that dictate what constitutes a legitimate scientific puzzle. When intractable anomalies accumulate beyond the paradigm's explanatory elasticity, a crisis ensues, culminating in a paradigm shift. Crucially, Kuhn insisted on the thesis of "incommensurability": competing paradigms cannot be adjudicated by appeal to an overarching, neutral observational language. Because observational data are inherently theory-laden—the very meaning of concepts such as "mass" or "space" undergoes discontinuous semantic transformation across paradigms—scientists working under divergent frameworks inhabit cognitively disparate perceptual worlds. Consequently, paradigm conversion resembles a Gestalt psychological shift rather than a compelling algorithmic proof derived from pure formal logic.
Philosophical critics immediately denounced Kuhn's incommensurability thesis as an invitation to cognitive relativism and irrationalism, charging that it reduced scientific consensus to mere sociological fashion or mob psychology. In later postscripts, Kuhn strove to attenuate these charges, clarifying that while objective, algorithmic cross-paradigm comparisons are impossible, scientific communities nonetheless evaluate competing frameworks against shared epistemic values: predictive accuracy, internal consistency, broad scope, theoretical parsimony, and fruitfulness. However, because individual practitioners inevitably weight these subjective values differently, theoretical choice remains an inherently value-laden deliberation rather than an unassailable mechanical calculation.
