Passage Reference
The vibrant pigment known as 'Maya Blue'—prominently adorning pre-Columbian Mesoamerican murals, pottery, and ritual codices—exhibits astonishing chemical resilience, withstanding centuries of exposure to tropical humidity, torrential rains, boiling nitric acid, and organic solvents without fading. Material scientists analyzing the pigment discovered that it is a nanostructured hybrid composite: molecules of the plant-derived dye indigo are encapsulated inside the micro-channels of a fibrous clay mineral called palygorskite. When heated together during manufacturing, the indigo molecules form hydrogen bonds with the clay channels, sealing the dye inside an impermeable inorganic cage that shields it from environmental degradation.
