Passage Reference
Text 1 Astrophysicists hypothesize that non-baryonic dark matter comprises roughly 85% of the total matter in the universe. This theoretical construct was formulated to explain why the outer stars of spiral galaxies rotate at velocities far exceeding predictions derived from visible baryonic mass under Newtonian gravity. Without an invisible halo of dark matter exerting gravitational pull, spiral galaxies would tear themselves apart.
Text 2 Proponents of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) argue that dark matter is an illusory ad hoc patch designed to rescue an incomplete gravitational theory. MOND posits that at extraordinarily weak gravitational accelerations (such as those experienced at the outer rims of galaxies), gravity does not follow the inverse-square law, but rather decays linearly with distance, accurately predicting flat galactic rotation curves without requiring invisible, undiscovered particles.

Based on the texts, both the dark matter hypothesis (Text 1) and MOND (Text 2) were formulated to explain which astronomical observation?
