Passage Reference
In 2023, marine biologists investigated whether microplastic ingestion impairs photosynthetic efficiency in giant clams (Tridacna gigas). They measured chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm ratio) across three tanks over 28 days: - Control (zero microplastics): 0.78 Fv/Fm ratio - Low Concentration (10 particles/L): 0.74 Fv/Fm ratio - High Concentration (100 particles/L): 0.52 Fv/Fm ratio Healthy symbiotic zooxanthellae typically exhibit Fv/Fm ratios above 0.70. The researchers concluded that high microplastic exposure causes severe physiological breakdown in clam photosystems.
