Level 3 Trap Drill
Passage Reference
Neuroscientists investigating memory consolidation hypothesize that the mammalian hippocampus 'replays' neural firing sequences during non-REM slow-wave sleep to transfer temporary declarative memories into permanent neocortical storage. In an experiment, rats were trained to navigate a linear maze while microelectrodes recorded the sequential activation of hippocampal place cells. The researchers hypothesized that during subsequent sleep, the identical sequence of place cells would activate in compressed reverse or forward replay.
