Level 3 Trap Drill
Passage Reference
Archaeologists excavating the monumental Great Houses of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico—such as Pueblo Bonito—estimated that ancestral Puebloan builders incorporated over 240,000 architectural timber beams between 900 and 1150 CE. Because the arid canyon floor lacked native ponderosa pine and fir forests, archaeologists debated whether timbers were harvested from local dwarf pinyon stands or carried on foot from distant mountain ranges. Archaeologist Christopher Guiterman used strontium isotope dendroprovenancing to test the hypothesis that timber was hauled over long distances from the Chuska and Zuni Mountains, located over 75 kilometers away.
