Level 2 Trap Drill
Passage Reference
For over a century, biology textbooks cited lichens as the classic textbook exemplar of a two-way mutualistic symbiosis between a single filamentous fungus (the mycobiont) and a photosynthetic green alga or cyanobacterium (the photobiont). In 2016, however, evolutionary biologist Toby Spribille and his colleagues analyzed the transcriptomes of alpine lichens and discovered a previously undetected third obligate partner: a basidiomycete yeast embedded in the lichen's cortex. This unexpected finding completely upended lichen taxonomy, proving that lichens are not simple bipartite pairings, but complex, tripartite multi-species symbioses.
