Passage Reference
Paleontologists traditionally characterized Mesozoic mammals as diminutive, nocturnal insectivores living in the shadowy margins of ecosystems completely dominated by dinosaurs. However, recent fossil discoveries in northeastern China—such as *Repenomamus robustus*, a badger-sized mammal whose fossilized stomach contents contained the articulated skeletal remains of a juvenile dinosaur—have dismantled this simplistic stereotype. These discoveries demonstrate that Cretaceous mammals occupied diverse ecological niches, including aquatic swimming, arboreal gliding, and active predation on small dinosaurs.
