Passage Reference
Engineers designing offshore wind turbine farms have traditionally spaced turbines at least eight rotor diameters apart along uniform rectilinear grids to minimize downwind wake turbulence. However, fluid dynamicist John Dabiri demonstrated that schooling fish manipulate vortices to achieve energetic efficiencies when swimming close together. Drawing inspiration from these aquatic schools, Dabiri modeled arrays of vertical-axis wind turbines configured in tightly coupled counter-rotating pairs, finding that adjacent turbines could harness mutual vortex flows to generate up to tenfold more power per unit of land area.
